Own every ‘round pound’ coin, and frame a chapter in British coinage

Say farewell to an everyday icon

Finally the time has come for the ‘round pound’ to be withdrawn from circulation, replaced by a new cutting-edge 12-sided design, the most secure coin in the world. Spanning 34 years, 25 editions and eight different designers, the round £1 coin is a true everyday icon with a special place in our affections.

As one decade gave way to another, it became clear that £1 banknotes were no longer fit for purpose. Lasting just nine months on average, the decision was made on 31 July 1981 to replace them. Practical and durable, the £1 coin issued on 21 April 1983 would soon become a mainstay of our currency. Now it too is ready for retirement, making way for a bimetallic coin that’s one step ahead of the counterfeiters.

Bookended by Eric Sewell’s original Royal Arms design and Gregory Cameron’s farewell composition, never released into circulation, this complete set of round £1 coins frames a chapter in British coinage. Featuring heraldic beasts, floral emblems, engineering triumphs and the United Kingdom’s capital cities, these much-loved designs sketch four decades of social history. Own them all and put them proudly on display as this once-modernistic coin assumes historic status.

Presented complete with the final ‘round pound’ and the new 12-sided £1 coin finished to Brilliant Uncirculated standard and a plaster model of the new 12-sided £1 coin designed by David Pearce, this beautifully framed set is a nostalgic trip through the recent past, chartered by the change in your pocket.
