Global Recognition
The personification of Britain, Britannia is recognised and trusted around the world. The icon first appeared on Roman coins almost 2,000 years ago and returned in 1672 on the coinage of Charles II. Since then, the icon has graced the coinage of every British monarch, reimagined and reinterpreted for each new generation. Since 1987, Britannia has been the face of modern bullion, representing strength and stability as well as a proud history. The coin’s global recognition also means it has a strong secondary market, making it a particularly liquid choice for many investors.
Accessibility and Choice
The Britannia 2023 gold bullion coin comes in a range of denominations, including a one ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and one-tenth-ounce coin. This range includes options for investors with varying budgets and those looking to make frequent purchases. Our Britannia coins are available in individual capsules, blister packs, tubes and boxes, which provide investors with choices within their portfolios. The iconic figure of Britannia is also available on a range of beautifully minted bullion bars, ranging in size from 1 gramme to 100 grammes and presented in tamper-proof packaging.
Britannia Coins and Tax Efficiency
Due to their status as UK legal tender, Britannia bullion coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for UK residents; CGT is a tax paid on any profit or gain made on an asset when sold, over a tax-free allowance. For the tax year 2023–24, the UK Government reduced the tax-free allowance, the first reduction of its kind in decades. It is worth noting that all gold, silver and platinum bullion coins from The Royal Mint are exempt from CGT, whilst our gold bullion coins and bars are also exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT).
Unparalleled Security
Our Britannia bullion coin is recognised as a world leader in bullion security, thanks to the four innovative security features added to the coin in 2021. These include a latent image that switches between a trident and a padlock when the coin is turned, micro-text that displays ‘DECUS ET TUTAMEN’, which translates to ‘An ornament and a safeguard’, tincture lines and an animated background. These features significantly reduce the risk of counterfeiting and mean that Britannia bullion coins are easy to authenticate visually.
The Value of Britannia Coins
The value of Britannia bullion coins is based on their gold content. Initially struck in 22 carat gold when it was introduced in 1987, the Britannia bullion coin has been struck in 24 carat gold since 2013, giving it a purity of 999.9.
The value of a Britannia bullion coin can also depend on the year in which it was struck and its condition. Our best value Britannia bullion coins offer collectors and investors the opportunity to buy Britannia bullion coins from The Royal Mint at the lowest prices.

A New Coinage Portrait
In 2023, we introduced the world’s first bullion coin featuring the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. Offering investors the chance to commemorate a new era in British history, the portrait appeared on the obverse of the coin, whilst the reverse featured Philip Nathan’s seminal Britannia design.
