Edward of Woodstock (1330–76), better known as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of Edward III of England and his designated heir. Although he died before acceding to the throne, the Black Prince is regarded as one of England's most distinguished military leaders during the Hundred Years' War, as well as one of the foremost knights of his time.

The Guyennois, also identified as ‘Pavillon D'Or’, gold noble exhibits a distinctive design on its obverse featuring the standing figure of the Black Prince, wielding a sword and gesturing with a pointing finger within the confines of a Gothic portico. Encircling the figure are four ostrich feathers, whilst two lions rest at the prince’s feet. The abbreviated Latin legend, when fully expanded, reads ‘EDWARDVS PRIMO GENITVS REGIS ANGLIE PRINCEPS AQVITAINIE’, which translates to ‘Edward, firstborn of the King of England, Prince of Aquitaine’.

On the reverse, the Latin inscription ‘DOMINUS ADJUTOR ET PROTECTOR MEUM ET IN IPSO SPERAVIT COR MEVM’ translates to ‘The Lord is my strength and my shield, and my heart hath trusted him’.
