Born in Libya in AD 145, Septimius Severus was the first African-born emperor of Rome. At the age of 18, Septimius travelled to Rome where the emperor, Marcus Aurelius, quickly instated him as a senator. In AD 191 Severus was made governor of Pannonia Superior (an area in Eastern Europe that borders the Danube), which gave him control of a large army.
