Produced for the coronation of James II on 23 April 1685, variations of this medal were struck by more than one pair of dies and some feature the inscription ‘CORONATION OF MARY 1685’. The obverse of the medal features a laureate portrait of James II (r.1685–88) facing right with an armoured draped bust, whilst the reverse features a laurel wreath, resting upon a cushion, with a hand issuing a crown from heaven.
