Passed by the English and Scottish Parliaments in 1707, the Act of Union led to the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain on 1 May that same year. This medal symbolises the union of two independent kingdoms – England, and Scotland. The obverse of the medal features the bust portrait of Queen Anne, crowned, and draped facing left, whilst the reverse features the British shield within the Garter, crowned, upon a pedestal inscribed with the double cypher of ‘AR’, supported by the heraldic lion and unicorn.
