Princess Anne was the second child and eldest daughter of George Augustus, the Electoral Prince of Hanover, who later become George II of Great Britain. In 1734, Princess Anne married William IV Prince of Orange-Nassau, who later died in 1751. Following her husband’s death, Princess Anne became Governor of the United Provinces. When she died in 1759, engraver J. G. Holtzhey designed a medal that shows a veiled Princess Anne draped with a halo of stars above on the obverse, whilst the reverse features a Sarcophagus decorated with a shield, and symbols of art and science below.
